How to Choose the Best Downhill Ski

Choosing the correct ski can be both nerve-racking and exciting. The idea of spending hundreds of dollars on a pair of skis that you haven't had the chance to demo is the nerves speaking, while the thought of carving down fresh snow gets your blood flowing! We have all been there, we want to help you make an easy decision in order to find the BEST downhill ski that's right for you.

Step 1: Decide where you will be spending your time skiing.

One of the main factors you want to consider when choosing the best ski for you is where you will be using it. If you are skiing the front side of resorts, then a carver is best for you. The front side of ski resorts are groomed everyday and a front-side carving ski with a narrow underfoot, such as the K2 Superific or Kastle LX 82, will make you feel like the queen of the slopes! If you are in the back bowls, then a wide powder ski will help you float your way down the trails and trees. Now-a-days, most skis are all-mountain, meaning you can use them in the back country as well as the groomers. They are made for a variety of terrain and are perfect if you are trying to explore the whole mountain in a days work, such as the Volkl Aura or Rossignol S3.

Step 2: What type of skiing will you be doing?

Will you learn to telemark this season, experiment with Touring (AT), or carve the slopes on a pair of downhill skis? When purchasing a pair of skis, try to keep in mind the type of skiing you will be doing. While most skis are made for everything, there are certain skis that we believe are best for the type of skiing you prefer. For example, G3 specializes in telemark skis, while Rossignol & K2 make great skis for AT. Kastle, Dynastar, and Blizzard make fabulous downhill skis.

Step 3: Bindings & Balance!

Everyone forgets that bindings are just as important as the skis you are putting them on. You can choose a touring binding, a telemark binding, a dynafit binding that does it all, or simply an alpine binding. Once you have chosen this binding, the next step is balancing it with you & your ski. One of the most over-looked parts of purchasing a ski is making sure that you feel balanced and completely comfortable on it. We recommend a biostance appointment with our skilled staff in order to balance your bindings and ensure you ski comfortably and to your best ability on the slopes.

Women's Demo Days at Loveland Ski Area

A great way to try our women's skis before you buy!

Just in case you missed it, today was our second demo day at Loveland Ski Area. If you are just hearing about it or couldn't squeeze it into your busy schedule, we are having two more on the first Thursdays of February and March (2/2, 3/1).

This is a great chance to try all of the latest and greatest in women's skis. We will be parked right at the base of Loveland mountain with our entire demo fleet for you to try! Our Divas will be there to answer any questions you may have.

Oh, and did we mention that it is FREE? All you need is a valid lift ticket or season pass to Loveland and a driver's license. All you need to do is show up, look for the Outdoor Divas flags and we will see you on the mountain!
