| April 29, 2008 | | Maria Kallman takes the gold. | Maria showed her true colors as she took on this race with strength, athleticism and speed. We knew we hired her for a reason. She was strong in all aspects of the race; especially the paddling. Maria is making a name for herself in the kayak world. This multi sport race started at the top of Monarch Pass with a 7 mile, backcountry ski leg, and then 22 miles of mountain biking to the Arkansas River to finish with a 6 mile whitewater paddle into downtown Salida. The proceeds from the race benefit the Arkansas River Trust, a non-profit organization based in Salida and committed to ensuring the long term health of the Upper Arkansas River and protecting its place in the culture and economy of the communities the River passes through.
Now this is a TRI-sport a true outdoor DIVAS can embrace. Female kayakers are few and far between but every year more and more ladies jump into the scene. The skiing part of the race turned into a tumble fest being that they had everyone in Nordic gear yet they descended down some pretty steep terrain. The mountain biking section was a breeze for Maria; she cruised down the 22 miles like it was nothing. Outdoor DIVAS was proud to have Maria representing in the sports of skiing, biking and paddling. Women’s kayaking, ladies mountain biking and female skiers are gaining speed and starting to really be competitors among themselves. If used to be only a few female entrants but now the competition is getting fierce---in a good way. Nice job Maria, we are proud of you! | Topic Tags: female paddlers, female skiiers, ladies races, lady mountain bikers, Maria Kallman, paddle, peddle, pole peddle paddle, Salida, ski, women's kayaking, women's mountain biking, women's race, women's skiing, women who whitewater kayak | |
